We might be biased, but we think winter is one of the best times to visit Robe. The town settles into a slower rhythm, inviting you to linger a little longer. Think empty beaches, warm lights glowing from historic pubs, and the scent of baked goods and red wine in the air. Whether you're escaping for a solo retreat or a weekend away with someone special, winter in Robe is all about slowing down, settling in and embracing the season. Here’s your guide to ‘Warming up to Robe’ this winter.
Embrace the Elements
Winter is when the Robe coastline feels at its most dramatic. Rolling swells, shifting skies, sea spray and the unmistakable scent of seaweed create a rugged beauty all of its own.
While it can be tempting to retreat indoors, winter rewards those willing to pull on a jacket and head outside. From West Beach through to the Obelisk, the full force of the Southern Ocean is on display during winter, with swell crashing against limestone cliffs and sea spray carried on the wind.
The trail linking town to Long Beach offers elevated views across Guichen Bay. As the track rises and falls through coastal vegetation, it can feel surprisingly protected from the elements even when the wind is up elsewhere.
For a different perspective on the coast, Robe Golf Club winds through coastal dunes and native vegetation, offering coastal views from some of the region's most unique fairways.
Slow Mornings
Winter weekends in Robe are best enjoyed without rushing, but it pays not to sleep in too late.
Rise of Robe opens early and closes once sold out, with those in the know arriving for still-warm sourdough, croissants, pain au chocolat and Portuguese tarts. Pick up a loaf for your stay and don't overlook the sourdough crackers for a platter later in the day.
From there, wander through town with a coffee from Union Café or Drift. If a weekend paper or glossy magazine is your thing, don't leave the newsagency run too late — Saturday morning is its only weekend trading window.
Take your time browsing a few local stores along the way. Salubrious Hour is a local gem, known for their own label of laid-back apparel, with a side of smoothies, açai bowls and a Friday morning run club.
And while you're passing by, check the Robe Cinema program in the window. You might just find the perfect excuse to settle in for an afternoon movie later in the day.
Local Cellar Doors
Some winter afternoons are best spent lingering. Whether that's watching the town drift by from a spot on the main street, settling in beside a fire or discovering somewhere a little unexpected, Robe has plenty of places worth staying for another round.
Woodsoak Wines is made for winter afternoons. Rug up in your puffer jacket, order a glass of wine and one of their much-loved samosas, and settle into your front-row seat on Victoria Street. There is something uniquely Robe about watching the town drift by from here on a winter afternoon.
Located in the old Wilson's Saddlery building, Karatta Wine Room & Gallery pairs cool-climate wines with contemporary Australian art in a setting full of character and charm. On cooler days, the fireplace and warm hospitality make it easy to find yourself staying for another glass.
For something a little different, make your way to Robe Town Brewery. Tucked away in the industrial area, the rustic brewery shed comes alive on winter weekends with live music, open mic sessions and plenty of local characters. The wood-fired brewery is known for its creative approach to brewing and relaxed atmosphere, making it a great place to settle in, grab a drink and enjoy good company.
If gin is more your style, book ahead for a tasting at Robe Gin. What began as a hobby has grown into a small local distillery producing Robe Gin, coffee liqueur and other spirits. The tasting experience is relaxed and personal, with the chance to sample the range and hear a little of the story behind the bottles.
And if you're keen to venture a little further afield, wine regions like Mount Benson and Coonawarra offer plenty of opportunities to warm up with a glass of Limestone Coast red in a cosy spot. July is an especially good time to visit Coonawarra, with the annual Cellar Dwellers celebrations bringing museum wines, special tastings and long lunches out from the cellar.
Find fire-side Comfort
Winter in Robe calls for crackling fires and cosy corners. From historic pubs to coastal wineries, these are our favourite spots to warm up by the fireplace this season.
Overlooking Guichen Bay, The Robe Hotel has a wood burner, classic pub meals and views across the bay. Wednesday nights bring The Pub Test, a lively trivia night with plenty of prizes and a healthy dose of local rivalry. Just up the road, The Caledonian Inn, fondly known as The Cally, dates back to 1858 and has an open stone fireplace in its cosy front bar that brings a welcoming glow during the cooler months. Their popular Wednesday roast night makes an evening by the fire even harder to resist.
And what better winter pairing is there than a fireplace and a glass of local wine? Norfolk Rise and Cape Jaffa Wines both have fires at the ready, making them inviting spots to settle in on a chilly afternoon.
And if your ORBE stay includes a fireplace or fire pit, you'll find firewood, kindling and marshmallows for toasting all ready to go. Sometimes the best seat by the fire is the one waiting back at your stay.

If there was ever a season made for saunas, it's Winter.
